As the winter frost melts away and the Fraser Valley begins to bloom, there is no better time to talk about the incredible benefits of getting children outside. In Chilliwack, we are lucky to have nature right at our doorstep. For children between the ages of 1 and 5, this natural world isn’t just a playground—it is the ultimate classroom.
At Cubs on Kent Daycare, we believe that fresh air and open spaces are essential for healthy growth. Our approach to child care focuses on hands-on experiences through play, and in the spring, that play naturally moves outdoors.
Here are five reasons why outdoor nature play is the best approach for your child’s development this spring.
1. Building Stronger Bodies (Gross Motor Skills)
Outdoor play gives children the room they need to move their bodies in ways they simply cannot do indoors. When children run on uneven grass, climb over small logs, or jump in puddles, they are building core strength, balance, and coordination. These “gross motor skills” are a major focus of our toddler and preschool programs. Unlike a flat indoor floor, nature challenges a child to navigate different heights and textures, making them more confident in their physical abilities.
2. A Workout for the Five Senses
Nature provides a sensory experience that no “educational” app can match. Spring in Chilliwack is full of new smells (fresh rain and blooming flowers), textures (the grit of garden soil and the soft moss on a tree), and sounds (birds returning and wind in the leaves). As we discussed in our post about hands-on experiences through play, engaging all five senses helps build stronger neural pathways in a young child’s brain.
3. Boosting Brain Power and Problem Solving
Outdoors, children are faced with “natural problems” to solve. How do I get across this muddy patch without getting stuck? How can I use these sticks to build a nest for a bird? Nature is open-ended, meaning there is no “right way” to play. This encourages children to think creatively and develop critical thinking skills early on. At our Kent Road facility, we encourage this curiosity by letting the children lead their own outdoor adventures.
4. Calmer Minds and Better Focus
It is a well-known fact among parents in BC that fresh air helps children sleep better and stay calmer. Spending time in nature reduces stress and anxiety, even in very young children. The wide-open space allows them to release energy in a healthy way. When children spend their mornings engaged in outdoor nature play, they often show better focus and a calmer attitude when it is time for indoor activities or naps.
5. Social Skills and Teamwork
When children are outside, they often engage in “collaborative play.” They might work together to move a heavy branch or take turns on a slide. These interactions are vital for learning how to cooperate, share, and communicate with peers. In our screen-free environment, children rely on each other for entertainment, which builds deep social bonds and empathy.
